  • Shut off the cold water supply to the tank and the supply to the heater.
  • Find the valve on the top or side of the heater. It is a brass fitting with a lever at the end and under it, there will be a threaded tube through which the pressure (and water) is released.
  • Place a bucket under the hose to collect the water.
  • Gently lift the lever; it is stuck and does not open or if you open it and it does not release water, the valve is faulty and must be replaced.
  • If it works, but leaks after doing this, the valve will need to be replaced.
  • If the water continues to flow after releasing the lever, the valve needs to be replaced.

Replacing the pressure relief valve

  • Turn off the water and the heater supply.
  • Partially empty the hot water tank.
  • Unscrew the exhaust pipe with sliding joint pliers.
  • Unscrew the old valve with the same pliers so you can take it with you to the shop to ensure proper replacement.
  • While you're in the store buying the valve, get some step sealing tape if you don't already have a roll at home.
  • Reassemble using sealing tape on all threads and don't forget to turn the water back on and turn it back on.
